The former chairman of Bank of Ireland, Richie Burrows, has been made chairman of British American Tobacco, the world’s second-biggest cigarette maker.Mr Burrows held the role at the bank from 2005 until last month. He resigned after apologising for a slump in the bank’s profits. He will replace Jan du Plessis, who is moving to the mining firm Rio Tinto. BAT is best known for its Lucky Strike and Dunhill brands. Last month, it reported £1.45bn first-half profits. Nick Scheele, BAT’s senior independent director, said that Mr Burrows had a strong record in international business and a “proven ability to work with a team from various cultures and countries.” Before Bank of Ireland Mr Burrows spent much of his career in the alcoholic drinks industry, and was chief executive of Irish Distillers – makers of Jameson Whiskey – for 22 years.
