From This is Money:
The average plot and shed contains more than £1,600 worth of greenery and contents, according to M&S Money, yet security outside our homes is lax.
Burglars know there are easy pickings to be found in the garden – last summer such thefts increased by two-thirds and they are expected to rise again this year.
It is not just objects such as barbecues, patio heaters and furniture thieves are after; trees, shrubs and even newly-laid turf also attract them. Garden security firm Gardien has had customers lose bay trees, paving stones and statues in the past month alone.
Tools left in an unlocked shed can also be used to break into your house. The cost of replacing items stolen from gardens can cost, on average, £378, says Saga Home Insurance, which offers garden cover as an add-on to its home and contents insurance for an extra £30.
It is worth checking your policy to see if your garden and shed are covered within your household insurance.
